Environmental Policies

Environmental Policy

The TRPA is aware of its responsibility with regard to environmental protection. For example, it has implemented an Environmental Policy under the terms of the Canada Marine Act (S.C. 1998, c. 10). This policy sets out environmental guidelines and principles. It aims to underline the TRPA’s commitment to minimize the environmental impact of port activities and to define orientations and guidelines for environmental protection.

It also establishes a reference framework for interventions and actions to ensure that the activities of the TRPA and its users are carried out in a manner that protects the environment and maintains the safety of persons and property. These activities must be carried out in accordance with applicable legislation and with the principles, objectives and procedures set out in the Policy. Its application and observance imply the personal and collective responsibility of the port community.

Environmental Management Policy

The TRPA has implemented an Environmental Management Policy under the Canada Marine Act (SC 1998, c. 10). Complementary to the Environmental Policy, the purpose of the Policy is to establish the environmental principles that the TRPA must apply in the management of its facilities, its real estate holdings and the activities and operations that take place on its property. Compliance with these principles will make it possible to minimize the negative environmental impacts on the Port’s property. The policy provides guidance to the TRPA both in its day-to-day management activities and its development planning.

This Policy has three objectives:

  • Ensure compliance with federal environmental laws and regulations
  • The TRPA ensures that its operations and those of its tenants are conducted in a manner that prevents pollution, minimizes negative impacts and environmental risks, and protects the quality of the environment.
  • Strengthen the enforcement of federal environmental laws and regulations
  • The Policy aims in particular to monitor the application of environmental principles in the management of Port’s facilities, real estate, activities and operations that take place on its property.
  • Supervise the conduct of environmental monitoring studies
  • It also aims to standardize visual verification studies, soil verification and environmental compliance verification (ECV) on its property in order to ensure the quality of monitoring activities to identify the issues and minimize the negative environmental impacts on Port’s property.
